Goodfellows of Lee County still on hunt for new home

DIXON – Goodfellows of Lee County is seeing success with its community fundraising campaign, but is still on the hunt for a new home.

The 108-year-old organization began fundraising last year to buy or build its own building. Donations have totaled about $30,000 so far, and they're looking to raise around $225,000, Goodfellows President Clara Harris said.

Harris said they've looked at different possible locations without luck and are grateful for community donations, big or small. The Midland States Bank Foundation recently gave the group $18,000.

"We really appreciate all of the support we've gotten from the community during the last 108 years, and we want to continue to service families in need," she said.

Goodfellows is most known for helping hundreds of families during the holiday season with gifts and food vouchers, but also gives away furniture, clothing, books and other household items as well.

In the summer, Goodfellows moved from its location in the lower level of 113 S. Peoria Ave. and carted 40 truckloads of donations to a temporary home at the Franklin Grove Church of the Brethren, 121 W. North St.

Goodfellows would need about 2,500 square feet of space and first-floor access to meet the needs of the elderly and those with disabilities.

The group is also planning different fundraising events, including one April 15 at McDonalds where Burn N' Bush is slated to perform.

Anyone willing to donate or provide space at low rent can contact Harris at 815-973-5135.
