City of DeKalb issues statement on COVID-19, urges people to refrain from public places

DeKALB – The City of DeKalb issued a statement Thursday urging people to avoid public places for the time being to limit possible spread of coronavirus.

Though there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in DeKalb County, it is expected the virus will impact every part of the nation at some point, the statement reads.

"The city is recommending that residents follow the advice of public health officials, such as washing hands frequently and avoiding contact with others when ill," the statement reads.

"To ensure the health and welfare of fellow residents and City employees, we ask that anyone who is ill avoid visiting public places," the statement continues. "Many of the daily visitors to City Hall are conducting business that can be handled online or over the phone, including payment of utility bills."

The city also asks that those who are ill avoid taking public transit, and that TransDev, TransVAC and the city's bus systems have implemented additional cleaning measures as a precaution.

City Council meetings are expected to continue, though residents are reminded they can view public meetings live on GATV14 or YouTube.

If you believe you are ill and require emergency services from DeKalb police or fire, the city urges residents to inform 911 call takers f any potential illness in your location ahead of time.
