The Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet has canceled weekend Mass services "for the time being" due to the COVID-19 coronavirus emergency, according to a letter issued March 16 by the Rev. Richard Pates, Apostolistic Administrator for the Diocese.
The Diocese had previously suspended Mass services for the weekend of March 14-15.
St. Anne Church at 551 Boulder Hill Pass in Oswego, St. Patrick Church at 406 Walnut Street in Yorkville, and St. Mary Church at 901 Center Avenue in Plano, are among the church communities affected by the cancellation.
In his letter, the Rev. Pates wrote, "I fully realize and feel the painful loss along with you the cancellation of Masses on weekends. Because celebrating Mass is central to whom we are, I understand that its absence creates a palpable void. However, out of genuine concern for the welfare of everyone, I believe it is prudent to cancel weekend Masses for the time being."
Rev. Pates noted that certain church gatherings, including daily Mass, funerals and weddings will be permitted provided that attendance does not exceed 50 persons as directed by Illinois Gov. JB Prtizker and every precaution is taken to prevent the spread of the virus.
