Good news: McHenry softball team, Don's Subs donate 100 meals to local hospital

Our journalists are working tirelessly to inform our communities of closings, cancellations, actions of state and local governments, and the ways in which our communities are adapting to contain the spread of COVID-19.

But we know there is so much more positive news out there, and we want you to help us tell it. Here is the latest Good News, as submitted by members of the community.

The McHenry softball team partnered with Don's Subs in McHenry to donate 100 meals, including sandwiches and cupcakes, to staff at the Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital on April 8.

The effort was organized by softball team parent Mollie Lard, who reached out to varsity coach Mikaela Mitsch and Don’s Subs. Softball parents and friends could donate to the effort by calling Don’s Subs. Don’s Subs matched each donation.

“I think everybody wants to do something,” said Lard, whose daughter, Kyra, is a junior on the softball team. “We can make a bigger impact as a team and do more as a group.”

Lard said it was a nice opportunity to help Don's Subs, which recently reopened at 323 Front St. in McHenry. Lard said she's hoping the effort inspires others to do similar things for essential workers and local businesses.
