The Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce, with guidance provided by the city of Crystal Lake, has canceled its annual Independence Day Parade, which was scheduled for July 5. The event was canceled because of restrictions on crowds from the COVID-19 pandemic.
"While disappointing to so many, this determination was made in the public health interests of Independence Day Parade participants, vendors, suppliers, volunteers, guests and partner agencies such as the Crystal Lake Lions Club, and others," according to a statement sent from the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce.
During Tuesday night's meeting, the Crystal Lake City Council postponed its fireworks display, which usually goes along with the Lakeside Festival. The festival has been postponed to the fall. If the display doesn't happen in 2020, the city could lose $10,000 to $15,000 because of a cancellation.
"I'd like to find the quickest way out of the contract," City Council member Ian Philpot said.
"I say we take all the money we're saving here and push back on the governor on this BS," council member Cameron Hubbard said.
The Chamber said that factors related to the postponement included the COVID-19 infection, executive orders related to assembly and social distancing requirements during phased reopening.
"This was a very difficult decision for those involved in the Crystal Lake Independence Day Parade but the wisest course of action given the current situation," according to the statement. "It is with great regret that we have to say that we look forward to seeing everyone in 2021. The Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce is committed to a full celebration, better than ever, next year."
