OREGON — Stronghold Camp and Retreat center is canceling summer camp because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but plans to make its idled buildings available to rent.
“Given all the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus, [cancellation] seems to be the proper, prudent decision for the health and safety of our campers, summer staff and international counselors,” Executive Director Danny Pierce wrote in a statement.
The year-round retreat and camping center operated by the Presbytery of Blackhawk, Presbyterian Church provides a variety of Christian and secular programming and events, meals, and camping for groups of all ages.
Each year, it gets hundreds of campers from all around the region, but this year is working on digital content to keep people connected to the camp through campfires and singing and praying together.
In light of the situation, the organization has taken steps to reduce expenses, including staff reductions, and is looking for help to pay its bills.
"We’ve been closed since March 20,” Pierce said in an earlier interview. “It’s been a major economic blow."
He is seeking financial donations or volunteers to help maintain the grounds, and has designated June as volunteer month.
"... for Stronghold to stay strong, we will need support from all those who care for and value our ministry,” Pierce said in the statement.
Its seven buildings, including a castle, will be available to rent, once safety policies and protocols that meet national, state and local requirements are put in place.
“As we open back up, please consider making a reservation for a family reunion, personal retreat or weekend getaway,” Pierce wrote.
“As a nation, we have a difficult road ahead. May we stay strong in our faith, our health and our willingness to work together for a common good.”
