ELBURN – The HBO series “Lovecraft Country,” which was filmed in summer 2018 in Elburn, will premiere in August, according to HBO.com. No specific date was announced.

The series was shot on Main Street in downtown Elburn in July and August that year. It also was filmed in Hebron, on the historic Woodstock Square and Marengo.

An HBO production company transformed the downtown businesses’ facades along Route 47 into the main street of a circa 1955 town to film its dramatic horror TV series.

The series was filmed extensively at locations in northern Illinois. Scenes also were filmed on Chicago’s West Side, in Ogle County on Route 52 and in White Pines State Park and in LaSalle.

“Lovecraft Country” is a horror drama set in the 1950s about a black man, 22-year-old U.S. Army veteran Atticus, who drives across the country searching for his missing father with his uncle, George – who is publisher of “The Safe Negro Travel Guide” – and his childhood friend, Letitia. Along the way, they encounter racism, the evils of Jim Crow America and malevolent spirits.

The series is based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff. It stars Jonathan Majors as Atticus, Courtney B. Vance as Uncle George and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Letitia. It’s produced by Jordan Peele, who wrote and directed the Oscar-winning horror film “Get Out,” and “Lost” creator J.J. Abrams, among others.
