Mandy Montford named new Crystal Lake City Council member

Appointment fills vacancy created by resignation of Haig Haleblian, who is now CL acting mayor

Mandy Montford was appointed as a Crystal Lake City Council member at the council’s Tuesday meeting.

Montford’s appointment fills a vacancy left by former council member Haig Haleblian, who was appointed as acting mayor on May 19, following the death of late Crystal Lake Mayor Aaron Shepley. Shepley was pronounced dead on May 4.

Haleblian was sworn in as a council member on May 2, 2017, meaning his four-year term was originally supposed to end on May 2021.

Because Haleblian had less than 28 months left in his term. According to Illinois Municipal Code, his vacancy can be filled by appointment.

According to Illinois Municipal Code, the mayor and City Council needs to fill a vacant council position within 60 days.

Haleblian formally resigned as a council member on June 2.

“I really look forward to serving with this great group. It’s an honor to be among all of you,” Montford said. “Hopefully, I do you guys proud.”

Acting Mayor Haleblian said he is looking forward to working with Montford.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, William Gronow, Pat McGinnis and Kathy Repholz were appointed to the Planning and Zoning Commission, with Jeff Greenman as chairman.

Mary Alice Fellers, Stacey Lorenz and William Weller were appointed to the library board.
