DeKALB – DeKalb and Northern Illinois University have a new local coffee shop: Cast Iron Coffee.
Cast Iron Coffee, located at 901 Lucinda Ave. Suite D in DeKalb, opened April 27.
Kyle Mason and his wife Daria opened up the full-service coffee shop late April. The shop serves coffee, espresso, chai and has numerous tea options and various pastries for sale.
Kyle Mason describes the coffee shop as “something we’ve always wanted to do, but still wanted to keep our day jobs.”
Kyle works as an administrator at Bright Field Church in DeKalb and Daria is a speech pathologist with the DeKalb School District. Kyle and Daria Mason live in DeKalb with their two children, their 2-year-old son Noble and 5-month-old daughter Willow.
The couple designed the coffee shop’s interior space themselves using wood, wrought iron metal and concrete floors to mix rustic, modern and farmhouse looks.
Kyle Mason said what sets Cast Iron Coffee apart from other coffee shops is the atmosphere.
“Our atmosphere is what sets us apart, that, and our great coffee,” he said. “We have a homey, cozy atmosphere that’s rustic and inviting. We even have a cast iron stove. We really just wanted to create a place where people want to spend time. Everyone needs a third place: home, job and a place you can go to to relax and unwind.”
Kyle Mason said the coffee shop’s atmosphere is “a great setting, but our coffee takes center stage.”
“All of our coffee is specialty, and we list its country of origin and flavor profiles,” he said. “We know where it came from, down to the farm. We take a lot of pride in that. If you haven’t visited us yet, come in and try our coffee. See our manager greet you with a smile and develop a relationship with our staff. My wife and I – and are children – are there often. We love connecting with our customers, meeting new people and starting to have regulars.”
In a Facebook post thanking customers for their first month of business, Daria Mason wrote, “In all of our planning, we definitely didn’t anticipate opening during a pandemic, but being able to serve you and build relationships during this odd time has made it all worth it. Having gone to NIU myself, I remember longing for a local coffee shop right on campus, so being able to be a part of this is surreal to say the least.”
