Kane County jail inmate charged for possessing shank

Michael Villagran of Aurora allegedly had sharpened weapon in his possession

A Kane County jail inmate is facing charges for possessing a 6- to 7-inch metal shank with a sharpened point, according to a news release from Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon.

The release states that Michael A. Villagran, 36, of the 1-99 block of South Lincoln Avenue, Aurora, with possessing a weapon in a penal institution, a Class 1 felony, and unlawful use of a weapon, a Class A misdemeanor.

Kane County prosecutors allege that on July 1 Villagran, a detainee at the Kane County jail, possessed the weapon.

Villagran appeared July 9 in Kane County bond court. Kane County Judge Michael Noland set Villagran’s bail at $200,000, with 10 percent to apply for bond.

Judge Noland set Villagran’s next court appearance for 9 a.m. July 15.
