Petitions for Joliet city election available Sept. 22

Petitions for candidates in the next Joliet City Council election will be available Sept. 22, the city has announced.

Three at-large positions on the City Council are up for election April 6.

The positions are all for four-year terms.

At-large council members are elected citywide. The council also has five district council positions that are not up for election in April.

The at-large positions now are held by Don Dickinson, Jan Quillman and Michael Turk. Dickinson announced over the weekend that he will not seek re-election. Quillman and Turk said they plan to run again.

Petitions will be available at the City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St. They can be returned to the clerk's office between Dec. 14 and Dec. 21.

Candidates must be eligible to vote in Joliet and must have lived within the city limits for at least a year before the April 6 election, the city said in a news release.

"Illinois law imposes other qualifications to be eligible to submit a petition for candidacy and to serve as an elected official of the city of Joliet," the release said. "Candidates should review Illinois law and other related codes to determine whether they meet the required qualifications."

The release noted that city employees are not responsible for reviewing petitions to determine whether they meet legal requirements.
