Johnsburg needed not only its fifth score, but its sixth score to nip Grant on a tiebreaker for a dual match victory in boys golf Wednesday at Chapel Hill in Johnsburg.
The teams tied at 174-174 through their first four golfers. Both teams had a fifth-best score of 49, although the Skyhawks had three golfers with 49s, which gave them the win.
Mike Link led Johnsburg with a 40. Cody Clauson (43), Mason Diedrich (45) and Peter Link (46) had the next three scores. Nick Grons, Nick Thill and Mike Preston all had 49s for the Skyhawks. Grant’s sixth score was a 54.
Niles Notre Dame 161, Marian Central 189: At Turnberry Country Club in Lakewood, Dylan Yegge and Mason Schwalbach both shot 45s to lead the Hurricanes in their East Suburban Catholic Conference loss.
Owen Jager added a 47 and Matt Cotting had a 52 for Marian.
Burlington Central 162, Jacobs 174: At Whisper Creek in Huntley, the Rockets posted their lowest score of the season in the FVC win. Tyson Malak fired a 34 for Burlington, followed by Chaz Rutke (40), Kevin McCoy (44) and Tyler Haines (44).
Jacobs was led by Ryan Frantik with a 39. Justin Cunningham had a 40, Jason Seaholm had a 43 and Kyle Schutt had a 52.
GIRLS TENNIS
Woodstock 4, Johnsburg 3: At Woodstock, Mei Cornell held off Amber Conant at No. 3 singles in three sets to send the Blue Streaks to the KRC victory.
Cornell won 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 for that victory. Priyanka Bhatt and Reese Freund won at No. 3 doubles for the Streaks, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 for another three-set win.
Emily Esparza and Hannah Wietermann (No. 1) and Lexi Sanchez and Chase Simonton (No. 4) won at doubles for Woodstock.
Johnsburg got wins from Gracie Cittadino (No. 1) and Jilly Popovich (No. 2) in singles and from Jennifer Bennett and Chandler Mendlik (No. 2) in doubles.
Jacobs 7, McHenry 0: At McHenry, the Golden Eagles didn't drop a set against the Warriors in a Fox Valley Conference victory. Chloe Siegfort (No. 1), Isha Desai (No. 2) and Bryn Reicha (No. 3) all won their singles matches, with McHenry forfeiting at No. 3 singles because of injury.
Kaya Trumbo and Sam Seibert (No. 1), Lara Santa-Ines and Alyana Hernandez (No. 2), Alison Gerhardt and Stefanie Bogs (No. 3) and Anya Wieczorek and Lissie Kontos (No. 4) added two-set wins at doubles.
Huntley 5, Cary-Grove 2: At Huntley, Ruhi Gulati (No. 1), Elaina Hibbeler (No. 2) and Alessandra Rivera (No. 3) all won their singles matches in straight sets for the Raiders in the FVC dual meet victory. Kylie Phommasack and Michelle Barnvos (No. 1) and Talia Duffy and Dyllan Cash (No. 2) each added wins at doubles for Huntley, which moved to 9-1 in the FVC.
Nicki Carpatiuc and Gwenn Moran won, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-4, at No. 3 doubles, and Brooke Iverson and Kim Klawitter won, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, at No. 4 doubles for the Trojans.
Woodstock North 6, Marengo 1: At Marengo, Sophia Ferru (No. 1), Anika Treadman (No. 2) and Ximena Garcia (No. 3) won in straight sets at singles for the Thunder in their KRC victory over the Indians.
Jacky Alvarez and Bethany Lintner (No. 2), Sophia Davidson and Belinda Mendoza (No. 3) and Elle Lagerstrom and Mariam Syed (No. 4) added wins in doubles for the North.
Noelle Haas and Ashtyn Martin had the lone win for Marengo at No. 3 doubles.
GIRLS GOLF
Marian Central 176, Marist 216: At Boone Creek in Bull Valley, Ava Notaro and Lauren McNulty each shot 41 for the Hurricanes (5-2) in the East Suburban Catholic Conference win. Ella Notaro had a 42 and Kathleen Stumpf chipped in a 52.
Harvard 208, Richmond-Burton 221: At Richmond, Emma Ackland paced the Hornets with a 44 in the KRC dual win. Joelle McMillan shot a 53, Julia Chupich had a 54 and Aaralynn Schneider added a 57 for Harvard.
Crystal Lake Central co-op 189, McHenry 203: At RedTail in Lakewood, Renata Petersen fired a 38 for the Tigers in the FVC win over the Warriors. Abby Rubsam shot 46, Jo Greeley had a 52 and Addison Cleary added a 53 for Central.
Madison Donovan led McHenry with a 42. Aubree Lundin had a 52, Gracie Gasmann had a 54 and Ashley Wachter added a 55.
Burlington Central 173, Prairie Ridge 194: At Chalet Hills in Cary, Elizabeth Tucker shot 39 for medalist honors and helped the Wolves to a season-long goal in their FVC loss to the Rockets.
Prairie Ridge broke 200 as a team for the first time. Ellie King (47), Anna Berry (52) and Kaylin Justen (56) had the Wolves’ other three scores.
Maya Gusciora shot 40 to lead Burlington to the victory. Emily Koh and Kelsey O’Connor each shot 43 and Emily Ahlers had a 47.
Huntley 173, Dundee-Crown 226: At Huntley, Nina Shaffer shot 39 to lead the Red Raiders to the FVC victory.
Lorelei Oomens added a 42 and Molly Baker had a 44 for Huntley.
GIRLS SWIMMING
McHenry 78, Woodstock North co-op 50: At McHenry, Melisa Nava had two wins for the Warriors in their FVC dual win against the Thunder. Nava won the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.63) and 100 backstroke (1:04.60), and Reilly Byron took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.55) for McHenry.
North co-op won five of the eight events, despite coming up short in the final team scores. Haley Halsall won three events for the Thunder, taking first in the 200 individual medley (2:21.57), 100 butterfly (1:03.80) and 500 free (5:33.31). Hannah Blaksley won the 50 free (25.39) and 100 free (55.97).
Huntley 71, Crystal Lake South co-op 25: At Sage YMCA in Crystal Lake, the Red Raiders beat the Gators in their FVC dual meet to stay perfect in the FVC at 7-0.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Burlington Central double dual: At Burlington, Robert Perry took second and Yusuf Baig was third as Burlington edged out Jacobs for an FVC dual victory, 27-28.
Jacobs’ Andrew Doetsch won the race, but the Golden Eagles suffered their first FVC loss. Jacobs’ Connor Maloney took fifth and the Eagles beat Huntley, 25-30. Burlington also beat Huntley, 25-30.
Huntley was led by Thomas Patel in fourth and Charlie Kucz in sixth place.
Marengo 19, Harvard 46: At Harvard, Luke Chaffin won in 17:39.79 to lead the Indians to a KRC victory over the Hornets on Tuesday.
Steven Austin led Harvard with a second-place finish. Marengo took the next six places, led by Zach Secor, Aaron Moehrlin and Tommy Lulinski.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Burlington Central double dual: At Burlington, Huntley's Breanna Burak, Brittney Burak and Molly Allen finished 2-3-4 as the Red Raiders came up with wins over Burlington and Jacobs.
Jacobs’ Kelly Carpenter won the race in 18:34.3, 13 seconds ahead of Breanna Burak. The Golden Eagles’ Elisabeth Kania was fifth.
The wins put Huntley (5-2 in FVC duals) in a good spot to make the faster heat of the FVC Meet on Saturday, Oct. 10. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the meet will be run in two heats, with the top five teams in one heat and the other five in a second heat.
Marengo def. Harvard: At Harvard, Ruby Escorza took second to lead the Indians to a KRC win over the Hornets, who did not have five runners for a complete team.
Savannah Swanson and Jordan Brogdon took fourth and fifth for Marengo.
Harvard’s Liz Flores won the race, with teammates Christina Koleno in third and Yiszel Calixto in sixth.
