Joliet church giving away $20 in free gas to 150 people this Saturday

New Covenant Worship Center in Joliet is hosting its fourth gas giveaway this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Marathon Gas, 2314 Glenwood Ave. in Joliet.

The church won't be checking proof of income or any other qualifications. People need only drive up to the pump and church volunteers will do the rest.

"Some people are out of work and we just want to be a blessing," Jonas Jones, pastor at New Covenant Worship Center, said. "I don't think anyone's turning down gas."

But come earlier than later, Jones recommends.

"In the past, I think we've done it in an hour and 15 minutes," Jones said.

Jones said the gas giveway was part of the church’s outreach vision for 2020 and he’s thankful the church was still a position to do it.

On Aug. 1 the same church also gave away $1,200 of laundry services between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at The Blue Kangaroo Laundromat on Cass Street in Joliet.

The last three gas giveaways were held at a former CITGO station on Joliet's east side, he said.

Jones said the church hosts a gas giveaway "once every couple of years."

"This is the first giveway at Marathon," Jones said.

"We moved our church into this neighborhood about three years ago, so we just wanted to impact the community right where we are," Jones said.

Initially the gas giveaway was going to be paired with a back-to-school coat drive.

"But because of covid happening, we decided not to do the [coat] drive," Jones said. "So we bumped up the giveaway."
