McHenry freshman Madison Donovan looked at her 91 on the scoresheets Wednesday at the Class 2A Wauconda Girls Golf Regional, which was better than most of the others posted.
Donovan and her teammates also checked the iWanamaker app, the new scoring system the IHSA is using which provides hole-by-hole updates.
For almost 45 minutes, Donovan nervously waited to see if she had qualified for Monday’s Dundee-Crown Sectional.
“That wait felt like an eternity,” Donovan said. “I was so stressed out. People kept saying, ‘You’re going to make it,’ but I didn’t believe it myself.”
Eventually, it became official. Donovan was sixth, and two players ahead of her were on qualifying teams, so she took the final of four sectional-qualifying spots.
Wauconda’s Liv Romer won with a 7-over-par 80 at Prairie Isle Golf Club in Crystal Lake, leading the Bulldogs to the team title at 380. Mundelein was second with 390, led by Kellie Shanahan (90) in fifth place individually.
Crystal Lake Central senior Renata Petersen (81), Prairie Ridge junior Elizabeth Tucker (82) and Lakes’ Allison Kennedy (89) took the first three individual spots.
“I honestly did not play my best game,” Petersen said. “I struggled a lot with the speed of the greens on the front nine. On the back nine, I just had to keep my head high. I was 3 inches from an eagle on No. 10. And my first shot on 16 was behind a tree, but I got up and down for par.”
Tucker felt she could have chipped and putted better, but was thrilled she gets to play another week.
“My mental state was good,” she said. “I didn’t have any hiccups. I remembered what coaches and teachers said, ‘Be patient and play your game. Everything will come.’ I was patient and stuck to my game. It was just me, my golf ball and my swing.”
Petersen, who plans on playing in college next season, looks forward to her final high school round at Randall Oaks on Monday. The IHSA initially planned on just regional competitions for golf and cross country because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But because those sports have done well with positivity rates, the IHSA added the sectional round last month.
“I’m extremely grateful more than anything,” Petersen said. “We’re blessed with having a postseason at all. I am excited and blessed to have one more round to play before my high school career is over.”
