Are you ready for some pork chops? First National Challenge taking form of drive-thru dinner

The First National Challenges between DeKalb and Sycamore have raised more than $1 million over the course of two decades for the two booster clubs.

With no football in the fall this year, the challenge is taking on a different form.

The First National Challenge Drive-Thru Dinner will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at Hy-Vee, 2700 DeKalb Avenue in Sycamore. Pork chop dinners with baked beans, cole slaw, a cookie and a bottle of water cost $10, and a hot dog, chips, cookie and water costs $5.

Meals are available to order through Monday on www.fnbochallenge.org.

Sycamore athletic director Chauncey Carrick said the booster clubs came up with the idea to recognize the service of both the clubs and the athletes.

"It's just something to get the booster clubs out in front of people, do something for the community, and maybe raise a little money on the side," Carrick said.

The annual basketball game between the schools is scheduled for Dec. 26. Normally at the NIU Convocation Center, this year's game is at Sycamore.

Carrick said he's not sure what's going to be able to happen in terms of a crowd yet but is hoping for the best.

"The worst-case scenario is we play the games and stream them," Carrick said. "We'd love nothing more than to have people in the gym but I'm not going to hold my breath. We're just going to do what we're allowed to do and go from there."
