Bears coach Matt Nagy was “really bothered” by receiver Javon Wims’ fight with Saints defenders.
The third-year Bears receiver was ejected from Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints after throwing two punches at Saints defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
After the whistle on a third-quarter play, Wims took two swings at Gardner-Johnson. The two players were pretty isolated out wide of the rest of the play and it took a moment for their teammates to realize what was happening. Even so, a scrum ensued and Wims wound up at the bottom of a pile of Saints players.
“I am really, really bothered by that third-quarter incident,” Nagy said. “That bothers me. I'm being completely honest with you guys. It bothers me. But I'm proud of the guys that played hard. I'm proud of the guys that were selfless and tried to do everything they could to help us win.”
Nagy said he didn’t see what started the fight, but he was still shaken by it. He no doubt will see the clip of Wims taking swings at the Saints.
“We've talked to him and told him that that's not how things go here,” Nagy said. “One of Javon's strengths is his character, who he is as a person. He's since apologized, but that's not – you don't have that. There's no part of that in this game.”
Multiple flags littered the field and the referees ejected Wims quickly. A 15-yard penalty against Wims set the Bears back to 2nd-and-20 after what had been a nice five-yard gain for receiver Allen Robinson on first down. To make matters worse, quarterback Nick Foles threw an interception on the next play.
Asked if Wims said anything to his teammates after the game Sunday, Foles declined to answer.
“I don’t have a comment on that question,” Foles said. “Just being honest.”
Robinson – a leader in the receivers room – said he hadn’t talked to Wims yet, but expects to have a talk about it this week.
Defensive tackle Akiem Hicks, the Bears’ captain for the day against his former team, said football can be emotional.
“I lost my cool before,” Hicks said. “You know, it’s part of the game. The elite, if you want to be elite, you’ve got to be able to control some of those emotions. … Knowing the character of Javon, I know he doesn’t want a situation that could go sour.”
