Update: 2 injured, no arrests yet in shooting on Ridge Drive Monday afternoon, say DeKalb police

DeKALB – Two people are injured after a shooting Monday afternoon outside the Hunter Ridgebrook Apartment complex, said DeKalb Police Cmdr. Craig Woodruff Monday.

"There were a couple of people injured," Woodruff told a Daily Chronicle reporter on the scene around 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Woodruff said police believe the injuries are non-life-threatening, and that police are still piecing together what led to gunfire shortly before 1 p.m. in the residential neighborhood.

James West, who lives in the 800 block of Ridge Drive, was standing outside of the apartment complex with his dog as police continued to investigate the reported shooting incident.

West said he was not told to evacuate the complex but thought it would be a good idea to leave with the dog as police continue to investigate the incident. He said he was in his apartment with the police-taped entrance when he heard three gunshots, which he initially thought might have been fireworks.

"Then I looked outside and saw people running and screaming," West said.

DeKalb Acting Police Chief Bob Redel confirmed there were two victims with non-life threatening injuries involved in the incident. He said it's his understanding that one victim was shot in the foot and another was shot in the leg, and the two victims were treated and released at a nearby hospital.

Redel said there have been no arrests made in connection to the incident as of about 7:30 p.m. Monday.

"We've got some leads and we're working those leads," Redel said.

DeKalb police are asking residents to avoid the 800 block of Ridge Drive. Woodruff said it's unclear whether the incident was isolated, or how many shots were fired.

"We're still investigating," Woodruff said.

Crime scene tape could be seen blocking the entrance to the apartment complex around 1:30 p.m. Monday, though no surrounding roads appear to be blocked off.

According to an alert sent out by Northern Illinois University police around 1 p.m. Monday, police responded to reports of a shooting in the 800 block of Ridge Drive around 12:58 p.m.

DeKalb police also sent a citywide alert out asking residents to avoid the area shortly before 1:15 p.m. Monday.

DeKalb County Sheriff's deputies are also on the scene assisting.

This is a developing story which will be updated as more information becomes available.
