Joesten was drafted into the Army in 1942 and served during World War II, traveling around Europe with the Fighting 69th Infantry. His infantry participated in the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during World War II. His brother Charles also participated in the battle with a different division and was killed in action.
