To the Editor:
The Illinois State Board of Education is proposing new teaching standards compelling adherence to progressive views of culture, family, and sexual identity. In my opinion, this form of thought control is both absurd and frightening. I hope unconstitutional as well.
It is time to push back at yet another attempt to redefine our history, culture, and values. Allowing one group of people to define and control the thoughts and actions of others never ends well. Requiring teachers to take an ideological stance on the board’s political and social directives sounds almost like something from early 20th century Germany. Disease and oppression are best treated early.
I believe we need to push back and shout down these proposed standards. I urge everyone to contact their state legislators before the state board meets to act on them on Dec. 16.
