Roquan Smith, Darnell Mooney ruled out for Sunday’s game

Bears bring up Marqui Christian, Manti Te’o from practice squad

Chicago Bears receiver Darnell Mooney makes the touchdown catch in front of Giants cornerback Corey Ballentine during their game Sunday at Soldier Field in Chicago.

The Bears on Saturday ruled out linebacker Roquan Smith and receiver Darnell Mooney for Sunday’s wild-card playoff game against the New Orleans Saints.

Smith injured his elbow in the first quarter last week against the Green Bay Packers, and Mooney injured his ankle in the fourth quarter. Neither player practiced at all this week.

In corresponding moves, the Bears elevated defensive back Marqui Christian and linebacker Manti Te’o to the active roster from the practice squad.

Cornerback Jaylon Johnson (shoulder) and linebacker Josh Woods (toe/glute) also are questionable. Johnson and Woods were limited participants in practice Friday. Defensive back Buster Skrine (concussion) already has been ruled out for Sunday’s game.

Skrine has not played or practiced since suffering a concussion Dec. 6 against Detroit.

Johnson was a limited participant in practice all week, but that’s actually a positive sign. Johnson hadn’t played or practiced since injuring his shoulder Dec. 13 against the Houston Texans.

The Bears’ defense could be in trouble with Smith unable to play this week. He was arguably the Bears’ best defensive player this season and earned AP All-Pro second-team honors Friday.

Mooney is another big loss for the Bears. The rookie has emerged as the No. 2 receiver behind Allen Robinson.
