Mooney, Smith, Johnson all inactive Sunday

The Bears will be without three key injured starters

Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson drops into coverage against the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 26.

Bears linebacker Roquan Smith, receiver Darnell Mooney and cornerback Jaylon Johnson were among those officially designated as inactive for Sunday’s Wild Card Round playoff game against the New Orleans Saints.

The Bears already ruled out Smith and Mooney on Saturday afternoon. In a corresponding move Saturday, the team added linebacker Manti Te’o and defensive back Marqui Christian to the 53-man roster for Sunday’s game.

The Bears hadn’t ruled out Johnson on Saturday, but he nonetheless is now listed as inactive. Other inactives for the Bears are: cornerback Buster Skrine, offensive lineman Lachavious Simmons, nose tackle Daniel McCullers and outside linebacker Trevis Gipson.

Johnson (shoulder) hasn’t played in a game since Dec. 13. He did return to practice in a limited capacity this week.

Smith (elbow) and Mooney (ankle) both suffered injuries in last week’s regular season finale against the Green Bay Packers. Smith injured his elbow while rushing through the Packers offensive line in the first quarter. Mooney absorbed a hard hit early in the fourth quarter and missed the remainder of the game due to an ankle injury. Neither player practiced at all this week.

The Bears will have to find ways to fill their production. Smith, a second-team All-Pro selection, will be hard to replace. Expect to see linebacker Josh Woods filling in.

Mooney emerged as the Bears’ No. 2 option at receiver behind Allen Robinson. With Mooney out, receivers Anthony Miller, Javon Wims and Riley Ridley will have to pitch in.
