The Bears reportedly lose another assistant coach

Report: Inside linebackers coach Mark DeLeone leaves for Detroit

An NFC North rival has poached a Bears assistant coach.

The exodus from Halas Hall continues for Matt Nagy’s coaching staff. Inside linebackers coach Mark DeLeone is the latest coach to leave the Bears, according to a report from ESPN’s Field Yates. DeLeone reportedly is joining new Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell and his staff.

The departure leaves secondary coach Deshea Townsend as the only defensive position coach remaining from the 2020 defensive staff, outside of Sean Desai, who was promoted from safeties coach to defensive coordinator last week.

Since former defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano announced his retirement this month, defensive line coach Jay Rodgers, outside linebackers coach Ted Monachino and DeLeone have all left for other teams.

Monachino’s exit previously had been reported, but according to a report from the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Tuesday, Monachino is expected to join the Atlanta Falcons as outside linebackers coach.

Monachino will be joining former Bears passing game coordinator Dave Ragone (now the offensive coordinator in Atlanta) and former Bears running backs coach Charles London (now the quarterbacks coach in Atlanta) on new head coach Arthur Smith’s staff.

DeLeone coached the Bears’ inside linebackers for two seasons. He had been an assistant coach with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013 to 2018 in various roles. As inside linebackers coach, DeLeone oversaw the efforts of linebackers Roquan Smith and Danny Trevathan. Smith emerged this season as a Pro Bowl contender and one of the top inside linebackers in the NFL.
