The Bears have signed five of their rookie draft picks to contracts, but first-round quarterback Justin Fields and second-round offensive tackle Teven Jenkins have yet to sign the dotted line.
Fifth-round tackle Larry Borom, sixth-round running back Khalil Herbert, sixth-round receiver Dazz Newsome, sixth-round cornerback Thomas Graham Jr. and seventh-round defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga have all signed their rookie contracts.
The Bears didn’t have the salary cap space to sign any of their rookies prior to June 1. With the release of former Bears left tackle Charles Leno going official on June 1, the team added an additional $9 million in salary cap space.
Presumably that means negotiations with Fields and Jenkins are still in the works. Their rookie contracts will be worth the most, given where they were selected in the draft.
All the rookies have been at the Bears practice facility in Lake Forest for rookie minicamp and the beginning of OTAs. Unsigned rookies are allowed to participate in minicamp and OTAs.
Newsome, a receiver selected out of North Carolina, suffered an injury Tuesday that is reported to be a broken collarbone. It could keep him sidelined into training camp.
