The city of Plano is moving forward with creating a disc golf course in Foli Park after hearing a presentation from the Plano Middle School PE teacher during a City Council meeting.
PE instructor Joe Secor explained the course would include multiple tee-off spots and baskets throughout the park near the middle school on the city’s south side.
Secor said disc golf is a safe sport that won’t obstruct any walking paths.
“I’m a big advocate for the sport of disc golf and what it can do for any community, for a park district, for any park, in general,” Secor said. “It’s played in totally open areas. Nothing in the way. We have more than enough space at Foli Park to do that.”
Disc golf is played similarly to Frisbee golf, with players competing to throw a disc into chained baskets set up across the course.
Secor added that no changes would be made to the landscape of the park, saying the proposed course is “very beginner-level” and that “things like the scenery and the trees we don’t want to take out.”
Although the course’s facilities have yet to be constructed or approved by the City Council, officials said they had placed paint marks in the park for a preliminary course design .
“I’m good with the idea, and I think it’s going to be a nice amenity down there at the park,” Mayor Bob Hausler said.
The Foli Park disc golf course would be the third to locate in Kendall County. The Oswegoland Park District operates Eagle Ridge Disc Golf Course behind the Oswegoland Civic Center at 5 Ashlawn Ave. in Oswego, and the city of Yorkville’s Parks and Recreation Department maintains the Fox Hill West Disc Golf Course at 1704 John St. in the city’s Fox Hill subdivision.
