Daughters of the American Revolution hold annual Youth Day Award luncheon for local students

The group presented awards to winners from local schools

This year’s DAR Good Citizens were Adam William Johnson from Bureau Valley High School, Alyssa Danielle Lopez from DePue High School, Victoria Lynn Ulrich from Hall High School, Leah A. Williams from LaMoille High School, Benjamin J. Koyak from St. Bede Academy and Reid Bryant Orwig from Princeton High School. Orwig was also the chapter winner for the DAR Good Citizen Essay Contest.

The Princeton-Illinois chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its annual Youth Day Luncheon on March 4th at the Underground Inn in Princeton.

Awards were given to DAR Good Citizens, winners of the American History Essay Contest and the Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest.

The DAR Good Citizens program and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited by their state board of education.

The student selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizen must exemplify the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

The American History Essay Contest and the Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest aim to promote American History by honoring significant historical people, places, dates, and events.

The American History contest is open to students who are grades 5-8. The 7th grade winner was Anna Boughton from Logan Junior High School. The 6th grade winner was Annalise Baker from Princeton Christian Academy. Baker was also the chapter and district winner.

The American Revolution DAR High School Essay contest is open to area high school students. The chapter winner was Arthur van den Berg from Princeton Christian Academy.

DAR is a service organization with three thousand chapters worldwide. Members are women eighteen years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot in the American Revolution.
