MANLIUS — On March 24, Bureau Valley High School held two separate candle-lighting induction ceremonies in the high school auditorium honoring its National Honor Society students.
The first ceremony was held for the nine senior members that were “officially” inducted into NHS last year (during the spring of 2020), but due to COVID-19 restrictions, had their induction ceremony canceled. They were finally able to celebrate their membership in the National Honor Society.
During the second ceremony, 11 junior members were inducted into the Bureau Valley chapter of the National Honor Society. Members were selected by the chapter’s faculty council for meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership and character.
Senior NHS students are: Regan Cook, Madison Dye, Evan Eckberg, Shelby Hardy, Makayla Heller, Jackson Lind, Lily Pickard, Elisabeth Sullivan and Brooke York. The Bureau Valley NHS chapter officers this year are Jackson Lind, president; Evan Eckberg, vice president; and Brooke York, secretary.
Juniors inducted were: Kaleen Carlson, Carter Haney, Braydon Higgins, Adam Johnson, Eileen Myong, Ashley Nordstrom, Hope Richardson, Aliza Rogers, Carter Salisbury, Tyra Sayler and Kyra Stoller.
The nine NHS seniors have served the school and local communities in a variety of ways. In addition to the strong academic records which established the eligibility for membership, the chapter members are leaders in many student organizations, and they serve the school and community through many service activities. Due to COVID-19, Bureau Valley High School’s NHS chapter has been unable to do everything they typically participate in throughout the year, but the NHS members are required to complete a minimum of 50 hours of service during their time in National Honor Society at Bureau Valley High School. This year, the NHS chapter ordered NHS T-shirts, celebrate their teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week during the first week of May, and will award one NHS senior a $500 scholarship at graduation.
The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students. The Bureau Valley High School chapter of the National Honor Society is advised by Joyce Wallace and Sarah Clark.
