LAMOILLE — In light of Fire Prevention Month, students in LaMoille got a few tips on fire safety this week following a program put on by Arlington Fire Department.
Fire Captain Nick Drummer and firefighter Greg Pinter visited with the students on Monday and talked with them about a variety of fire safety matters. Just a few of the topics included: what to do if a grease fire breaks out, the important of smoke detectors in the home and how their batteries should be changed out during the time changes twice a year, and how sleeping with the bedroom door closed at night could slow down the spread of fire to the bedrooms.
Drummer and Pinter also put on a live fire demonstrations to show students how to use a fire extinguisher and what they can expect when using them. They also suited up in their bunker gear and explained how their fire equipment worked and aided them in a fire.
The two started out their program at the Allen School, where they taught elementary students how to “stop, drop and roll.” They also encouraged students to go home with their families and establish a safe meeting place of where to go in case a fire ever breaks out in the home.
Aside from safety, Drummer and Pinter also talked about being a volunteer firefighter for their local fire department. They said the department is always looking to recruit more volunteers. Anyone willing to join must be 18 years old or older and be willing to undergo the proper training before being sent to a fire.
The Arlington Fire Department responds to more than 20 fires in a year, according to Drummer.
