Old-time October Fest held in Kewanee

Church of Peace hosted the traditional October gathering

KEWANEE — The Church of Peace in rural Kewanee recently hosted its annual October Fest celebration.

The church was organized by German Lutheran settlers in 1876 and the October gathering is important to the church. In fact, the German potato salad and sauerkraut recipes are from the 1800s. Clint Block, church president and fourth generation member, took charge and made 15 pounds of potato salad. Potatoes are grown locally by a church member and the church ladies provided the desserts made from their local apples and cherries. Wyanet Locker provided the bratwurst and Arends’s Orchard the four gallons of apple cider.

Pastor Andrew Christman said a brief prayer and welcomed the 50 members and guests. After the meal and clean up, everyone enjoyed a bonfire, cooking marshmallows on willow sticks and listening to the kids play. Christmas said, “It is wonderful to experience Christian fellowship and bonding in a county setting.”

Church of Peace is an independent Christian church with an active and dedicated congregation. Church services are at 10:30 a.m. Sundays and visitors are always welcome.
