Illinois back over 5,000 total COVID-19 hospitalizations for the first time since December 2020

Statewide, COVID-19 patients now occupy 36% of Illinois’ total ICU beds

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 20,804 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 96 additional deaths Tuesday, as two of the state’s 11 health care regions dropped below 5% in staffed, available Intensive Care Unit beds.

Illinois is averaging 16,041 new coronavirus cases per day over the past week, the highest average at any point of the pandemic.

The 96 new COVID-19 deaths is the most in a single day in the state since February 11.

As of late Monday, Illinois had 5,200 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, the most since December 8, 2020. Of those, 1,093 were in intensive care units, also the most since December 8, 2020, and 592 were on ventilators.

In Region 1 (DeKalb County, Rockford and the Sauk Valley), there are only four staffed, available ICU beds out of 139. In Region 7 (Will and Kankakee counties) there are six staffed, available ICU beds out of 133.

Statewide, COVID-19 patients now occupy 36% of the state’s total ICU beds.

For Monday, the state administered 48,877 shots.

The state received the results of 137,427 COVID-19 tests in the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday afternoon. The state’s positivity rate increased to 8.9%

Illinois has seen 2,098,064 total cases of the virus, and 27,684 people have died. The state has conducted a total of 44,052,340 tests since the start of the pandemic.

Vaccine update: As of Tuesday, IDPH reported a total of 21,183,435 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been distributed statewide, with 19,034,693 vaccines administered.

As of the time this story was published, 7,688,868 of the population of Illinois have been fully vaccinated, or 60.35%. Illinois has a population of 12,741,080 people.

Illinois is now up to 2,994,362 people who have received a booster vaccine dose, or 23.5% of the state’s population. Among 5-11 year olds, who became eligible for a vaccine in November, 27.13% of that age group in the state have received at least one dose, while 18.35% are fully vaccinated.

Among Illinois residents 5 and older:

Fully Vaccinated: 1,776,466 (86.9%)

At Least 1 Dose: 1,950,316 (95%)

There can be as much as a 72-hour delay in reporting from healthcare providers on vaccines administered.

In northern Illinois, here is the percentage of the population fully vaccinated by county:

Chicago: 62.59%

Suburban Cook: 66.66%

Regional update: All 11 regions in the state are in Phase 5.

Regional data from the IDPH remains on a three-day lag.

The North Suburban (McHenry and Lake counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 10.3%. Currently, 20% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, McHenry County’s seven-day positivity rate average increased to 12.5%. Lake County, which does about two-thirds of the testing in the region, is reporting a rolling average of 9.4%.

Hospitalizations have decreased or remained stable eight out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to a total of 223 COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The West Suburban (DuPage and Kane counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 12.1%. Currently, 20% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, Kane County’s seven-day positivity rate increased to 12.4%, and DuPage County’s increased to 12%.

Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable two out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 447 total COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The South Suburban (Will and Kankakee counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 14%. Currently, 4.5% of ICU beds are available.

Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable two out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 255 total COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The North (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 10.2%.

Currently, 2.8% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, DeKalb County’s positivity rate increased to 12.2%, Lee County’s rate increased to 7.3%, and Whiteside County’s went down to 6.7%.

Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable two out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 289 total COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The North-Central (Bureau, Fulton, Grundy, Henderson, Henry, Kendall, Knox, La Salle, Livingston, Marshall, McDonough, McLean, Mercer, Peoria, Putnam, Rock Island, Stark, Tazewell, Warren and Woodford counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 12.0%.

Within this region, La Salle County’s seven-day positivity rate increased to 9.9%. Currently, 12% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable for two out of the past 10 days. The region is up to a total of 448 COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

Chicago’s positivity rate increased to 13.1%. Currently, 11% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable for one out of the past 10 days.

Suburban Cook County’s positivity rate increased to 12.4%. Currently, 12% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable one out of the past 10 days in this region.
