Illinois sets single-day record for COVID-19 cases; hospitalizations at highest level since Dec. 1, 2020

IDPH: State’s positivity rate rises to 10.2%

The United States has improved its surveillance system for tracking new coronavirus variants such as omicron, boosting its capacity by tens of thousands of samples since early 2021.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported a single-day, state-record 30,386 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 87 additional deaths Thursday.

For Wednesday, the state administered 70,096 shots.

The state received the results of 196,449 COVID-19 tests in the 24 hours leading up to Thursday afternoon. The state’s positivity rate went up to 10.2%

Illinois has seen 2,149,548 total cases of the virus, and 27,821 people have died. The state has conducted a total of 44,469,630 tests since the start of the pandemic.

As of late Wednesday, Illinois had 5,689 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, the most since December 1, 2020. Of those, 1,010 were in intensive care units, and 565 were on ventilators.

Vaccine update: As of Thursday, IDPH reported a total of 21,335,465 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been distributed statewide, with 19,176,277 vaccines administered.

As of the time this story was published, 7,707,654 of the population of Illinois have been fully vaccinated, or 60.49%. Illinois has a population of 12,741,080 people.

Illinois is now up to 3,077,848 people who have received a booster vaccine dose, or 24.1% of the state’s population. Among 5-11 year olds, who became eligible for a vaccine in November, 28.03% of that age group in the state have received at least one dose, while 19.14% are fully vaccinated.

Among Illinois residents 5 and older:

At Least 1 Dose: 8,204,140 (83.3%)

Among Illinois residents 65 and older:

Fully Vaccinated: 1,777,937 (87%)

At Least 1 Dose: 1,953,069 (95%)

There can be as much as a 72-hour delay in reporting from healthcare providers on vaccines administered.

In northern Illinois, here is the percentage of the population fully vaccinated by county:

Chicago: 62.74%

Suburban Cook: 66.82%

Lake: 64.37%

McHenry: 61.27%

DuPage: 70.71%

Kane: 61.02%

Will: 61.46%

Kendall: 63.24%

La Salle: 54.24%

Grundy: 53.30%

DeKalb: 52.60%

Ogle: 52.61%

Regional update: All 11 regions in the state are in Phase 5.

Regional data from the IDPH remains on a three-day lag.

The North Suburban (McHenry and Lake counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 11.7%. Currently, 19% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, McHenry County’s seven-day positivity rate average increased to 13.9%. Lake County, which does about two-thirds of the testing in the region, is reporting a rolling average of 10.7%.

Hospitalizations have decreased or remained stable six out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to a total of 234 COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The West Suburban (DuPage and Kane counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 14.2%. Currently, 18% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, Kane County’s seven-day positivity rate increased to 14.3%, and DuPage County’s increased to 14.2%.

Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable two out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 497 total COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The South Suburban (Will and Kankakee counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 15.6%. Currently, 6% of ICU beds are available.

Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable two out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 284 total COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The North (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 10.9%.

Currently, 5% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, DeKalb County’s positivity rate increased to 14.3%, Lee County’s rate increased to 7.5%, and Whiteside County’s went up to 7.6%.

Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable two out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 294 total COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The North-Central (Bureau, Fulton, Grundy, Henderson, Henry, Kendall, Knox, La Salle, Livingston, Marshall, McDonough, McLean, Mercer, Peoria, Putnam, Rock Island, Stark, Tazewell, Warren and Woodford counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 13.5%.

Within this region, La Salle County’s seven-day positivity rate increased to 10.4%. Currently, 11% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable for two out of the past 10 days. The region is up to a total of 465 COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

Chicago’s positivity rate increased to 15.1%. Currently, 12% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable for one out of the past 10 days.

Suburban Cook County’s positivity rate increased to 14.1%. Currently, 12% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable one out of the past 10 days in this region.
