SYCAMORE – Two workers were taken to the hospital for serious injuries following an explosion in Sycamore Monday morning, Sycamore Police Chief Jim Winters said.
Winters said the explosion occurred at 8:34 a.m., in the 900 block of Crosby Ave., at Seymour of Sycamore – a paint manufacturer known for inventing aerosol paint.
Sycamore Fire Chief Bart Gilmore said the injured workers are in stable condition after they were taken to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital.
Sycamore Fire and Police departments responded to the scene Monday morning and found two workers with serious burns, Gilmore said.
“When we arrived there was one person on the ground,” Gilmore said. “We had them treated and transported by an ambulance. A second person was found and he was treated and transported.”
The explosion caused a box alarm fire, but less than an hour after the combustion Winters described the situation as mostly contained.
“There is no known threat to adjacent areas,” Winters wrote at 9:22 a.m..
Gilmore said the cause of the explosion is still under investigation. It, however, wasn’t something you’d find in an action movie, Gilmore said.
“It didn’t take the roof off the building,“ Gilmore said. ”It wasn’t something you’d see in Hollywood, it was just an ignition more than thing.”
Gilmore said foam and water based fire suppression systems inside what has been called the north building in the industrial complex aided firefighters in extinguishing the fire.
“Fire engines had to assist with supplying water to the sprinkler system,” Gilmore said. “Eventually crews went in with a two and a half inch hose line to put the final knock on the fire.
