Some Mayfield Township residents are in temporary housing after a fire burned through their home late Sunday night, DeKalb County Sheriff Andy Sullivan said.

Sullivan said deputies from his office, alongside firefighters with Genoa-Kingston, Sycamore, Kirkland and DeKalb departments responded a 911 call reporting a fire in the 28000 block of Three Points Road in Mayfield Township about 11:20 p.m. Sunday.

“The fire department did speak to the homeowner and they obtained assistance from [The American] Red Cross,” Sullivan said. “They responded to the scene as well, probably to help them with housing.”

It’s the second fire that left DeKalb County residents without homes just days before a major holiday. Dozens of DeKalb city residents also were displaced after a multi-level apartment fire late Sunday.

The Mayfield Township home already was evacuated by the time first responders arrived on the scene, Sullivan said.

Crews put out the fire before the structure was deemed a total loss, according a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office news release.

“It appears that nothing was suspicious in the nature of the fire, but it appears it may have started with a wood pellet stove,” Sullivan said. “That will continue to be investigated by the Fire Marshall.”
