Remembering Port Chicago program set for Jan. 11 in DeKalb

DeKalb Public Library in DeKalb.

DeKALB – The DeKalb Public Library will host a program for patrons to learn about the Port Chicago 50, a group of Black sailors branded by the U.S. Navy as mutineers.

The program will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 11 in the library’s lower-level Zimmerman Meeting Room, 309 Oak St.

The free program is free intended for adults and teenagers.

The sailors refused to return to unsafe working conditions after two explosions killed 320 and injured 390 in 1944 in Port Chicago, California. The group protested their treatment, was tried, and convicted of mutiny.

The program will be led by Carol Cherry. No registration is required to attend.
