Remaining two buildings in rental complex uninhabitable

An excavator puts debris in a dumpster after a portion of the apartments at 1024 W. Hillcrest Drive in DeKalb was torn down earlier in the day. The structure was ravaged by fire on Dec. 22, 2024, and condemned.

DeKALB – Demolition is underway this week for a DeKalb apartment building that was condemned in December due to a major fire.

The fire displaced almost 60 residents in the three-building complex days before Christmas.

The building at 1024 W. Hillcrest Drive was where the blaze started the night of Dec. 22. The fire began in a single unit and quickly spread to the attic, Fire Chief Mike Thomas previously said.

City officials announced after Christmas the building would be demolished due to significant structural damage from the fire.

Two neighboring buildings in the complex, 930 and 934 Greenbrier Road, were deemed uninhabitable but have not been set for demolition as of Thursday.
