DeKALB – A man suffered life-threatening injuries after he was stabbed early Saturday morning, and a DeKalb woman has been charged with attempted murder, authorities announced Sunday.

Iesha S. Gilmore, 23, of DeKalb, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery in an attack reported around 4 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Deputy Jim Burgh said the victim, 21, called 911 himself after suffering a single stab wound to the upper back. The man underwent surgery but was alert as of Sunday, Burgh said.

He said investigators pieced together a motive throughout the day Saturday.

“It was a domestic, it started as an argument and that was the result,” Burgh said.

Gilmore was arrested late Saturday night, Burgh said.

Sheriff’s deputies and DeKalb city police responded to a 911 call that a person had been stabbed. The caller alerted police from building No. 17 at the Suburban Apartments rental complex on Twombly Road in unincorporated DeKalb, authorities said.

Police found a man suffering from a stab wound and immediately began first aid until paramedics arrived, according to the sheriff’s office. The man told police he was stabbed in the area of Hillcrest Drive and Annie Glidden Road.

Paramedics took the man to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb, and then to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

The man is expected to survive, authorities said.

Burgh said DeKalb city police aided the investigation when it initially appeared that the stabbing happened away from the apartment in city limits.

During the investigation however, authorities said they learned the man was stabbed at Suburban Apartments, in the same unit the 911 call came from, according to the release.

Gilmore was arrested and is being held at DeKalb County jail in Sycamore pending a pretrial release court hearing expected Tuesday. The courthouse is closed Monday because of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday.

Court records were not yet available as of Sunday.
