Multiple school districts in DeKalb County have announced closures effective Tuesday due to bitter cold temperatures expected to bring windchills well below zero.
DeKalb County and much of northern Illinois will be in a cold weather advisory from 9 p.m. Monday through noon Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Low temperatures Monday night into Tuesday will fall to 8 below, and are forecasted at about 3 below Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Tuesday’s high is expected to be around 2, with wind chills reaching as low as 28 below, forecasts show.
The following districts have announced school closures or e-learning days Tuesday:
- DeKalb School District 428: E-learning day with virtual lessons for students. Teachers are expected to communicate lesson instructions. All district offices and buildings will be closed, and activities canceled. Families should expect more information via email, text or voicemail, according to a district statement.
- Genoa-Kingston School District 424: School is canceled.
- Hiawatha School District 426: School and all activities are canceled. The learning day will be made up on Feb. 17, according to a district news release.
- Hinckley-Big Rock School District 429: Students will have an e-learning day Tuesday.
- Indian Creek School District: Students will have an e-learning day Tuesday, according to a social media announcement from Superintendent Chad Willis.
- Sandwich School District 430: School, all activities, practices and games are canceled.
- Sycamore School District 427: All schools, buildings and OSCAR will be closed.
- St. Mary’s School - DeKalb: Schools will be closed and students will have an e-learning day Tuesday.
