Kaneland's Angelina Gochis won a state championship Saturday at the IHSA Girls Wrestling tournament. The sophomore was one of four area medalists, including teammate Brooklyn Sheaffer, Sycamore’s Ema Durst and DeKalb’s Alex Gregorio-Perez.
A total of four DeKalb boys and girls wrestlers, five from Kaneland and seven from Sycamore qualified for state tournaments. Alex Gregorio-Perez, Angelina Gochis, Brooklyn Shaeffer and Carson West won sectional titles.
Morris swept the Huntley Quad with three wins Wednesday while DeKalb and Huntley each picked up wins.

DeKalb’s wrestling teams opened the season on a positive note Wednesday, sweeping all of their foes in the DeKalb Super Duals. The boys team beat Moline and Lake Park, while the girls squad defeated Burlington Central, Moline, South Elgin and Lake Park.
Girls wrestling expanded both statewide with the addition of a regional tournament to the state series as well as locally with all four teams that offer boys wrestling sending girls to the postseason as well. We look at the best in our all-area team.
In Kaneland’s third year competing in girls wrestling, freshman Angelina Gochis made some history. The 105-pounder won the school’s first state title and finished the year 47-5. She was named the first Daily Chronicle Girls Wrestler of the Year.
Batavia senior Sydney Perry ended her high school career with her third state championship at Bloomington's Grossinger Motors Arena on Satuday while Kaneland freshman Angelina Gochis won the program's first title.
