DeKalb man charged after kicking woman in face during late 2021 incidents, records allege

DeKalb man charged after allegedly kicking woman in face, twisting her tooth, records state

DeKALB – A DeKalb man is facing charges months after he allegedly pushed a woman down, kicked her in the face and caused her tooth to almost fall out during a domestic dispute, according to court records.

Cesar K. Sanchez, 26, of the 800 block of Kimberly Drive was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony, and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor. If convicted of the felony charge, Sanchez could face up to seven years in prison.

According to DeKalb County court documents, a woman called police in November to report multiple domestic violence incidents, one that she said happened in late October and another in November.

The woman said that, after a verbal dispute, Sanchez allegedly pushed her to the ground, kicked her and caused her tooth to get jammed and twisted about Oct. 25.

“On a later date of Nov. 17, after a verbal dispute over his jealousy issues, Sanchez pushed her down again and kicked her more,” the documents state. “This caused two black eyes, bumps in her temples, and scrapes and bruises on her arm.”

Sanchez allegedly fled the scene following the Nov. 17 incident after learning police were on their way, according to the documents. DeKalb County Judge Joseph Pedersen issued a warrant for Sanchez’s arrest Nov. 29 following the incidents, the documents read.

Twenty-third Circuit Court Judge Marcy Buick set bond for Sanchez at $10,000, with 10% to post, in court Tuesday. Sanchez was present in court via Zoom.

Alicia Caplan, assistant state’s attorney for DeKalb County, asked for the $10,000 bond during the hearing Tuesday. She also asked Buick to order Sanchez to have no contact with the woman involved in the domestic-battery cases.

“In this case, because the defendant did have a warrant for a felony aggravated domestic, a Class 2 felony, and was picked up now with new misdemeanor charges to the same victim, the state is requesting bond in this case,” Caplan said. Buick granted that request, too.

Buick determined Tuesday that Sanchez earned too much money at his job to be represented by the county’s public defender. However, DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch spoke for Sanchez on Tuesday, since the DeKalb man hadn’t yet had a chance to hire a private attorney.

McCulloch said Tuesday he doesn’t think that Sanchez should have to wait until Friday to be released, since that is when Sanchez’s next paycheck is scheduled to come in. He asked Buick to release Sanchez on a recognizance bond, meaning he would be let out of jail with just his signature.

“Pre-trial services believes that he is appropriate for release,” McCulloch said. “I think a stay-away order is appropriate. He’s local, lives with family.”

Sanchez is due back in court at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 14, with the option to appear before Judge Pedersen via Zoom.
