Elgin man cited for DUI after car crashes into propane tank on Plank Road in rural Sycamore

SYCAMORE - An Elgin man was airlifted to a Rockford hospital with injuries and cited for driving under the influence after his car went off the road and hit a propane tank on Plank Road Saturday night, said officials with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred in unincorporated Sycamore around 9 p.m. Saturday, said Chief Deputy Jim Burgh with the sheriff’s office Sunday.

Dalbir S. Gill, 36, of Elgin, was charged with driving under the influence and improper lane usage after a 2013 Lexus he was driving westbound towards Sycamore went off the road, Burgh said.

“It went off the road near the intersection of Moose Range and struck a tree and hit a propane tank on that corner,” Burgh said. The propane tank was on the property of a home at the corner, in the 27000 block of Moose Range Road.

“It did not catch fire,” Burgh said. “Sycamore Fire was able to get it shut down right away. There were no other cars involved.”

Gill suffered injuries as a result of the crash. He was airlifted around 9:30 p.m. to OSF Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford.

“He was extricated from the car,” Burgh said. “We haven’t got a [current] status yet. He was unconscious at the time but still breathing.”

Sheriff’s deputies shut down a portion of Plank Road for a short time Saturday night, Burgh said, but the road has since been reopened.
