Roundup: Local wrestling teams meet at Comet Classic; BBCHS, Kankakee boys bowling advance to sectionals

Reed-Custer Comet Classic

Reed-Custer (151.5 points) picked up a fifth-place finish as hosts of the Comet Classic, where a total of eight local teams competed on Friday and Saturday. The next-closest local teams were Bradley-Bourbonnais in 10th place (113 points) and Central-Iroquois West in 12th place (95).

For Reed-Custer, Jeremy Eggleston (138 pounds) placed first in his weight class with three wins via fall and a win by decision in the championship match. Dominic Alaimo (215) placed second while Colton Drinkwine (106) and Kaaden Wood (120) both placed third.

Zach Hoffner (120) was Bradley-Bourbonnais’ highest finisher, placing first, while Kayden Roach (175) placed second for the Boilermakers. Central-Iroquois West had Gianna Panozzo (150) placed second and Evan Cox (144) placed third.

For Wilmington, Logan Van Duyne (190) was dominant on his way to a first-place finish, winning three matches by fall and one by technical fall. Herscher’s highest finisher was Alex Mendez (144), who placed sixth.

Peotone’s Thomas Raschke (132) went 3-2 in the meet, as did Manteno’s Brady Anders (138). Marquan Riley (165) was Kankakee’s highest scorer, going 2-2.

Coal City 74, Dakota 6; Coal City 54, Princeton 17

The Coalers were in control once again in dual action on Saturday, improving to 26-6 on the season with a pair of wins.

Landin Benson (175 pounds) and John Keigher (215) were the only Coal City wrestlers to compete in two matches, and both went 2-0 on the day.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Coal City MLK Shootout

Kankakee 56, Wheaton Academy 36

The Kays picked up a win in their first game at the MLK Shootout on Saturday, bouncing back from a Thursday loss to improve to 13-9 on the season.

Ava Johnson scored a team-high 22 points in the game. TaLeah Turner joined Johnson in double figures with 10 points while Shania Johnson scored eight points.

Marian Catholic 50, Kankakee 35

The Kays dropped their second game in Coal City, falling to a strong Marian Catholic team by 15 points. Kankakee fell to 13-10 overall this season with the loss.

Benkwasha Stroud led the team with 14 points in the loss. She got 12 of those points in the fourth quarter on four 3-pointers. TaLeah knocked down three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, accounting for all nine of her points in the game.

Marian Catholic 50, Coal City 39

The Coalers lost their first game as host of the MLK Shootout on Saturday, dropping their overall record this season to 14-6.

Darcy Ness led the Coalers with 14 points while Emma Rodriguez had nine points. Kylee Kennell had five points and six assists.

Coal City 58, Wheaton Academy 56

The Coalers held off a comeback attempt from Wheaton Academy to end the MLK Shootout with a close win. They improved to 15-6 overall this season.

Emma Rodriguez scored a team-high 19 points while also leading the team with nine rebounds. Sydney Larson also scored in double figures with 10 points.

Regular Season

Watseka 55, South Newton 26

The Warriors took care of a winless South Newton team in non-conference play on Saturday, extending their winning streak to 15 games in the process. They improved to 17-1 on the season with the home win.

Christa Holohan led the Warriors with 13 points, followed closely by Rennah Barrett with 12 points. Megan Martin had seven points and 10 rebounds.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Watseka 65, Grant Park 52

The Warriors bounced back from a Thursday loss to beat the Dragons at home in non-conference play on Saturday. Watseka improved to 8-11 overall this season with the win, their sixth in the last seven games. Grant Park fell to 7-12 overall.

Watseka got a standout game from Quinn Starkey, who hit six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 28 points. Andrew Shoemaker had 13 points, James Newell had 12 and Payton Schaumburg had 10.

For Grant Park, Ethan Barnas scored a team--high 18 points on six 3-pointers of his own. Blake Brown had 13 points.

Coal City 50, Prairie Central 48 (OT)

The Coalers grabbed a dramatic non-conference win on the road on Saturday, improving to 14-5 overall on the season. They staged a furious comeback, outscoring Prairie Central 16-5 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Dylan Young led the Coalers with 17 points. Gavin Berger and Gaven Vestal had eight points apiece.

St. Anne 67, Cissna Park 58

The Cardinals improved to 16-5 overall this season with their non-conference win on the road Saturday. It was their sixth win in a row. The Timberwolves fell to 5-14 with the loss, their fourth in a row.

No individual stats were immediately available for either team.

Milford 71, Chrisman 53

The Bearcats picked up their first Vermilion Valley Conference win of the year at home Saturday. It was their second win a row overall, improving their record to 4-17 and 1-6 in conference play. No individual stats were immediately available.

Wilmington 51, Westmont 29

The Wildcats responded to a conference loss on Friday by picking up a non-conference win at home on Saturday. They improved to 13-6 overall with the win, their fifth in the last six games. No individual stats were immediately available.

Friday BOYS BOWLING

IHSA Minooka Regional

It was a stellar weekend for Bradley-Bourbonnais and Kankakee, as both teams advanced to the sectional round. The Boilermakers finished second overall with a team score of 5,551. They were led by freshman Parker Sidener’s 1,232, good for fourth overall individually. Cooper Daugherty scored 1,179, with Jack Kanoski finishing just under 1,000 pints with a score of 946.

The Kays were led by Noah Hillman, whose 1,250 pins were third overall individually. Zion Lee was also a top-five individual, finishing fifth overall with 1,201. Freshman Maxim Marshall was the next-highest scoring Kay, finishing with a 797.

Reed-Custer’s Mason Vasil advanced as an individual with a 1,102.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bishop McNamara 65, Aurora Christian 53

The Fightin’ Irish opened their Chicagoland Christian Conference season with a road win that improved them to 17-2 on the season. No individual stats were immediately available.

Gardner-South Wilmington 59, Grant Park 50 (OT)

The Panthers snapped an eight-game losing streak in dramatic fashion at home on Friday. They came from behind in the fourth quarter to force overtime and then outscored the Dragons 17-8 in the extra time. Gardner-South Wilmington improved to 2-17 overall and 2-5 in the RVC with the win. Grant Park fell to 7-11 (5-3).

The Panthers were led in scoring by Cameron Gray with 14 points. Cole Hampson had 10 points, Leondre Kemp had nine points and Holden Grimes added eight points.

For Grant Park, Blake Brown scored 19 points while Ethan Barnas had nine points. Jayden Kaack added eight points and Aiden Overbeek had six.

St. Anne 69, Momence 54

The Cardinals were able to pull away and keep their unbeaten River Valley Conference tally intact at 8-0, improving to 15-5 overall. Chris Link had a game-high 18 points. Matthew Langellier, Deion Fifer and Brandon Schoth all pitched in 11 points.

Momence (8-10, 4-4) was paced by Nick Charbonneau’s 17 points. D’Angelo Hundley added 15 points, followed by eight from Erick Castillo.

Central 66, Beecher 55

The Comets downed the Bobcats at home on Friday to grab their fifth-straight RVC win. Central improved to 13-7 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Beecher fell to 11-8 overall and 6-2 in the RVC.

Aidan Podowicz led Central with 20 points. He was joined in double figures by Blake Chandler with 15 points and Owen Rasmussen with 10 points.

For Beecher, Dominick DeFrank scored a team-high 19 points. Orlin Nesbitt scored 10 points and Wences Baumgartner chipped in with seven points.

Coal City 44, Manteno 34

The Coalers continued with their hot start through Illinois Central Eight Conference play, improving to 13-5 overall and 6-1 in the conference, while Manteno fell to 12-8, 5-2.

No individual stats were immediately available for either team.

Peotone 62, Herscher 46

The Blue Devils got an explosive 27 points from Brandon Weiss to propel past the Tigers, improving to 6-11 and 2-5 in the ICE. Ruben Velasco worked his way into a double-double, finishing with 14 points, 15 rebounds and six assists. Logan Mather had nine points, and Alex Chenoweth added five points and assists apiece.

No individual stats were immediately available for the Tigers (5-13. 1-6).

Donovan 61, Tri-Point 48

The Wildcats faced a 29-28 halftime deficit before storming away in the second half to improve to 3-14 and 2-5 in the RVC, thanks to superb efforts from Brandon Hennieke and Braden Klecan. Hennieke went for 24 points, 10 rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block. Klecan had 20 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Preston Harrington-Dewitt added seven points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Carter Ponton did a bit of everything, finishing with five points, four rebounds, nine assists, stix steals and six blocks.

Milford 59, South Newton 43

The Bearcats snapped a five-game losing streak with their home, non-conference win on Friday. They improved to 3-17 overall.

Milford had four players score in double figures, led by Caleb Clutteur with 22 points. Beau Wright had 12 points, Tyler Runner scored 11 and Hixon Lafond added 10.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Morris 52, Manteno 38

The Panthers fell at home in non-conference play on Friday, suffering just their second loss of the season. They dropped to 17-2 on the season.

Lila Prindeville led the team with 12 points. Maddis Gesky scored 10 points and led the team with eight rebounds. Emily Horath had seven points and seven rebounds.

Beecher 60, Gardner-South Wilmington 30

The Bobcats doubled up their RVC opponents to improve to 8-11 and 6-3 in conference play. Aylin Lagunas went off for a game-high 21 points to lead Beecher, followed by nine points from Makenzie Johnson and eight points apiece from Jenna Pevion and Molly Vladika.

Gardner-South Wilmington (4-16, 1-7) was led by nine points apiece from Grace Olsen and Madison Wright. Maddie Simms had seven points.
