IHSA State Finals: In Friday’s preliminary round, Wilmington finished ninth in the small school division (88.36) to advance to Saturday’s final. In the co-ed division, Bradley-Bourbonnais scored an 86.53, good for 19th overall.
Girls bowling
IHSA Morton Regional: The Bradley-Bourbonnais girls bowling team clinched a spot in the Decatur Sectional with their third-place finish at the Morton Regional on Friday. The Boilermakers scored 4,890 points, just 21 shy of second place.
Brianna Dyer led the team with 1,152 points, the fifth-best individual score in the regional. Haleigh Richardson had 1,057.
Kankakee missed out on a team spot in sectionals with a sixth-place finish, but Serena Birr earned a spot as an individual with 1,047 points. Herscher’s Cassie Benjamin also earned an individual spot with her 950 points.
The Tigers placed eighth as a team and Bishop McNamara placed 10th.
IHSA Plainfield Central Regional: Reed-Custer did not field a full team for regionals on Friday, but will still be represented at the Decatur Sectional. Chaylene Crews earned an individual spot with her 967 points.
Peotone and Beecher both competed in the regional as well, placing 10th and 11th respectively.
Boys basketball
Herscher 60, Coal City 49: Herscher’s heating up, as the Tigers won their fourth game in a row Friday to improve to 11-15 and 4-8 in the Illinois Central Eight Conference. Austin Buckley led the Tigers with 17 points, with Jacob McCree right behind him with 16. Tanner Jones added a dozen points.
No individual stats were immediately available for the Coalers (18-8, 8-4).
Peotone 54, Reed-Custer 44: The Blue Devils stayed red hot with Friday’s win over the Comets in ICE play. It was Peotone’s sixth win in a row and eighth in their last nine games, improving their record to 12-12 overall and 5-6 in conference play. Reed-Custer fell to 8-18 (2-10).
Ruben Velasco picked up another double-double for Peotone in the win, scoring 17 points to go with 16 rebounds. Brandon Weiss and Logan Mather were also in double figures in scoring with 14 points and 13 points respectively.
Reed-Custer was led by Jacob Reardon, who posted a big double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Collin Monroe added 14 points.
Wilmington 69, Lisle 54: Wilmington picked up its fourth win in a row on Friday, taking down ICE opponent Lisle at home to improve to 17-8 overall and 7-5 in conference play. The Wildcats had four players score in double figures, led by Lucas Rink with 21 points. Ryan Nelson had 17 points, Brysen Meents had 12 and Ryan Kettman had 11.
Unity Christian Academy 81, Bishop McNamara 74 (OT): The Fightin’ Irish went down in overtime to fall to 21-5. Callaghan O’Connor’s 17 points were a team high, followed by 15 apiece from Karter Krutsinger and Trey Provost.
Oakwood 52, Iroquois West 50 (OT): Friday’s Vermilion Valley Conference tilt in Gilman went down to the wire in extra time, where Oakwood was able to escape with a road win. Kobie Hendershot and Garret Tammen each had 11 points to lead Iroquois West (9-15, 3-6). Wyatt Breen and Beau Howe each had eight points.
Salt Fork 43, Watseka 32: Friday marked the fourth-straight game for the Warriors that ended in a loss in VVC play. It was their sixth loss in a row overall, dropping them to 8-17 (2-6). No individual stats were immediately available for Watseka.
Bismarck-Henning 66, Milford 44: After picking up a VVC win three days prior, the Bearcats dropped a conference game at home Friday to fall to 6-21 overall and 2-8 in the VVC. No individual stats were immediately available for Milford.
River Valley Conference Tournament
Gardner-South Wilmington 65, Illinois Lutheran 34: The Panthers opened up play in the River Valley Conference Tournament with a 31-point win in Friday’s play-in round, improving them to 5-20 on the season. Cole Hampson was huge in the win, scoring 25 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Jarrek Hirsch had 10 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds. The Panthers will face Central in the first round of the tournament Saturday.
Donovan 72, Tri-Point 34: Friday’s play-in RVC Tournament game was left to little doubt, as the Wildcats (5-17, 2-7 RVC) advanced to face top seed St. Anne with their dominant performance. Carter Ponton and Joel Tiffany each had 14 points. Ponton added five assists, a rebound, eight steals and two blocks while Tiffany had two boards, two assists and a steal. Preston Harrington-Dewitt added 13 points, four assists and three steals.
Girls basketball
Cissna Park 63, Schlarman 13: Despite it being their fourth game in the last five days, the Timberwolves showed no signs of exhaustion in Friday’s win. They were dominant at home in a Vermilion Valley Conference matchup, improving to 23-4 overall and 9-0 in the VVC.
Addison Lucht led the team with 19 points to go with four assists and four steals. Lauryn Hamrick was also in double figures with 11 points and five rebounds while Sophie Duis had eight points and five rebounds.
Calvary Christian 47, Grace Christian 20: The Crusaders dropped a nonconference contest at home on Friday. No individual stats were immediately available for Grace Christian (4-19).
