The Bradley Bourbonnais Community High School Scholastic Bowl team is preparing to compete against the top 320 high school teams in the country at a national championship in Atlanta, Ga., following a successful season.
BBCHS participated in the Illinois High School Scholastic Bowl Coaches Association Turnabout Tournament on Saturday at Homewood-Flossmoor High School.
The BBCHS A Team took second place in the 28-team tournament, its second top-three finish in its two tournaments this season.
The Boilermakers fell short in the championship match against Westmont on the final question. Seniors Gavin Quinlan and Quinn Meadows and freshman Xavier Schultz all finished among the top 10 individual scorers in Saturday’s tournament.
BBCHS is now 19-7 on the season, including a 14-4 record in its two tournaments.
On Nov. 23, the Boilermakers finished third in the IHSSBCA David Riley Memorial Kickoff Tournament, which qualified them for the National Academic Quiz Tournaments High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta, over Memorial Day weekend.
While the district is paying for a good portion of the trip to nationals, the BBCHS Scholastic Bowl team is seeking donations to cover the remaining cost to travel to Atlanta to compete.
Community supporters can donate by mailing a check payable to BBCHS to Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School, Attn. Mike Dorsam, 700 W. North St., Bradley, IL 60915, or search for “Support Bradley-Bourbonnais’ National Quest,” organized by Mike Dorsam, on GoFundMe.com.
So far, the team has raised about $1,600 toward its $4,000 goal on GoFundMe.
“Our kids have earned an incredible honor, and it would be an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them to compete with the best teams in the country,” Dorsam said.
