Marquette Academy announced Friday that longtime Crusaders assistant coach and defensive coordinator Ken Carlson has been named its new head football coach.
Carlson will succeed Tom Jobst, who two weeks ago retired after 15 very successful seasons in that post, thanks in part to Carlson’s contributions as part of the coaching staff for the last 10 years.
During that time, Carlson was instrumental in two state semifinal appearances and 10 consecutive playoff berths. In the news release making the announcement, it noted Carlson’s “extensive coaching background and deep connection to Marquette’s rich traditions” over those seasons, as well as his “deep understanding of the game and strong work ethic.”
It added that he played a pivotal role in the development of young players and fostering team unity.
“Coach Carlson has shown outstanding leadership, dedication and a true understanding of what it takes to continue a successful football program,” MA principal Brooke Rick said in the release. “His vision for the future of Marquette Academy football, along with his experience and ability to connect to players, make him the perfect choice to lead our Crusaders on the gridiron.”
A graduate of Yorkwood High School (now Monmouth United), Carlson is also a graduate and former member of the football team at Augustana University.
He spent eight seasons as the quarterback and defensive backs coach at Streator High School under head coach Kelly Kane and five seasons as special teams coach and defensive coordinator under head coach Kirk Melody.
Carlson has also won three conference titles and coached two state champions and multiple other medalists at the IHSA State Track and Field Meet.
