Red Devils coach has taken a new position

SPRING VALLEY - Hall High School is looking for a head football coach, again.

Hall Athletic Director Eric Bryant said Logan Larson has resigned after one year as head coach to take a new position.

Friday Night Drive could not confirm where Larson’s new position will be. His hometown, Pleasant Plains, has an opening after the resignation of head coach John Hambelton in November after seven seasons. The Pleasant Plains position remains listed as “TBA” on the IHSA website as it does for Hall.

Larson graduated from Pleasant Plains in 2013 after playing two seasons at Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin.

He came to Hall last May after serving as an assistant coach for three years for 2023 Class 2A State runner-up Athens. The Red Devils went 2-7 last fall under Larson’s direction, going 1-4 in Three Rivers Mississippi play. He was the first Hall head coach hired with no ties to the school in 45 years.

When hired at Hall, Larson said being a head coach was “something I’ve dreamed about since I was little. Literally, since the first grade I’ve always wanted to be a head football coach.”

Larson could not be reached for comment.

Bryant said Hall has reopened the position filled by Larson just eight months ago.

“We’ll be looking. We’re in the process,” he said.

The Hall job is the fourth in the Illinois Valley to open up since the end of the season. Ottawa Marquette has filled its vacancy after the resignation of Tom Jobst with longtime assistant Ken Carlson while the Mendota and L-P jobs remain open.

The Pleasant Plains' school board meets on Jan. 21 and its coach is expected to be named then, athletic director Brent Grisham said.

Pleasant Plains, which started its program in 2003, finished 2-7 last fall, and went 23-39 in seven seasons under Hambelton, highlighted by a 7-4 record and a Class 3A second-round playoff appearance in 2018, his first season.
