Wheaton Academy’s Belay Brummel is the Friday Night Drive Team of the Week MVP

Warriors’ junior QB threw for 277 yards and four TDs in 36-3 first-round win over Coal City

Belay Brummel this season is part of a Wheaton Academy football team that’s had the program’s most wins in over 50 years.

He certainly won’t forget his team’s latest one.

Brummel, Wheaton Academy’s junior quarterback, threw for 277 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 51 yards and a TD, leading the Warriors to a 36-3 win over Coal City in a Class 4A first-round playoff game. He was voted as the FridayNightDrive.com Team of the Week MVP with 209 votes.

A total of 5,418 votes were cast for the Team of the Week.

The win lifted the Warriors into a second-round playoff game at Joliet Catholic this Friday.

Brummel on Tuesday took a time to answer some questions from Suburban Life sports editor Joshua Welge.

Welge: First off, what was it like to play in that game last Friday? It seemed like it was a great game for you, and the team.

Brummel: It was a team win. Our defense shut them out. Our offense just clicked on all cylinders. That’s just all the hard work that we put in and it finally coming together.

Welge: You have a couple good quarterbacks on your team. What’s your relationship with David [Dorn] like? He’s had a great year and you’ve had a great year.

Brummel: We kind of feed off of each other. We compete in practice, which makes each other better. David was obviously hurt, so I came in and did what we have been practicing all summer long.

Welge: For those people who haven’t seen you play, what kind of quarterback are you?

Brummel: I just want to get the win. Whatever I can do to get the win, that’s what I’m going to do.

Welge: How do you feel about the year that you guys have had? It’s a great year, I looked it up, this is the most wins that Wheaton Academy football has had in a season since 1957, that’s crazy to think about.

Brummel: The culture is definitely changing with the coaching staff, I think this game this weekend [Friday at Joliet Catholic] is going to be one of the biggest games that our program has been in. We’re in the best position we’ve ever been in to get the win.

Welge: What do think about the challenge this week? Obviously everybody does about them.

Brummel: At the beginning of the year I would hope every team’s goal is to win a state championship. Like coach said, to win the state championship you have to beat the best and we feel like we have one of the best teams in Illinois. We’re not going to back down. Every week we’re going to play to the best of our abilities and to play for Christ and that’s what we’re going to do this week.

Welge: Before I go, do you have a favorite quarterback that you like to watch on TV?

Brummel: I love Justin Fields, just his mental side of the game, he is never too high and never too low. And I like Patrick Mahomes because of his playmaking ability.
