Marian Central grad Chris Streveler signs with Miami Dolphins

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Chris Streveler looks to throw a pass against the Carolina Panthers on Nov. 14, 2021, in Glendale, Ariz.

Crystal Lake native Chris Streveler has a new football home.

The former Marian Central star has signed a contract with the Miami Dolphins, the team announced Tuesday. Streveler, 27, spent the past two seasons as a backup quarterback with the Arizona Cardinals. He appeared in two games last season as the third-string quarterback behind Cardinals starter Kyler Murray and backup Colt McCoy.

The Cardinals waived Streveler in November, and he signed with the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad days later. He did not appear in any games for the Ravens.

Streveler’s deal with the Dolphins is for an active roster spot. Although NFL free agency doesn’t begin until March, teams can sign players off other teams’ practice squads if they sign that player to their active roster.

Streveler is the Dolphins’ second quarterback under contract in 2022. Tua Tagovailoa remains the starter in Miami under new head coach Mike McDaniel. Tagovailoa’s backup, Jacoby Brissett, is scheduled to become a free agent in March.

Streveler was the Northwest Herald Football Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012. He initially went to Minnesota to play college ball but didn’t see the field much. After transferring to Football Championship Subdivision South Dakota, he became a star for the Coyotes and was a runner-up for the Walter Payton Award (the FCS version of the Heisman Trophy) after the 2017 season.

He went undrafted in 2018 but played two seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League – winning a Grey Cup championship in 2019 – before signing with the Cardinals in 2020.
