Photos: Barges navigate icy conditions on the Illinois River

A barge passes Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022, underneath the Shippingsport Bridge at La Salle. The Illinois River has yet to ice over this year despite the cold temperatures. Barge traffic on the Illinois River is a year-round operation. Vessels tend to travel at a slower pace in the Illinois River in the winter months due to the icy conditions. The mercury is expected to fall below freezing beginning Friday through the weekend before warming in the mid to upper 30s toward the beginning of next week. (Scott Anderson)
