SPRING VALLEY – It was back and forth throughout the contest between Fieldcrest and Bureau Valley at the second day of the 50th Colmone Classic and in the end it was the Knights with the hard fought 58-55 victory over the Storm Monday.
In other games, Eureka defeated St. Bede 62-46 while Rock Falls downed Putnam County 76-43.
The Knights held a slim 46-44 advantage heading into the final quarter, but the Storm would score the first four points of the quarter with Bryce Helms finding Brad Schoff for the layup and the 48-44 lead.
The next possession saw Kash Klendworth finding Jordan Heider and then Layten Gerdes draining the 3-pointer to give the Knights the 51-48 edge.
“I think when we went to the smaller lineup it gave us a bit of an advantage tonight,” Fieldcrest coach Jeremy Hahn said. “The big guy (Landon Hulsing) was giving us some trouble inside and the smaller quicker lineup seemed to favor us this time.”
Just moments later Heider got the steal and went end to end for the bucket, but the Storm would fire right back with a 3-pointer from Logan Philhower that cut the deficit to 54-53 with under a minute to go.
With Fieldcrest now leading 55-53 it was Hulsing with the rebound off the Helms miss, but was blocked which led to Gerdes hitting a pair of free throws for the Knights and a 57-53 edge.
Husling then got the put back for the Storm, but the Knights hit their free throws and came away with the 58-55 victory.
“Yeah we had too many turnovers tonight,” Bureau Valley coach Jason Marquis said. “We did a nice job getting the ball into Hulsing in the third, but I think their smaller lineup gave us some trouble a bit and too many stretches where we just lacked discipline tonight.”
Bureau Valley came out of the gates strong driving to the basket for buckets from Elijah Endress and then 3-pointers from Endress, Philhower and Brad Schoff for a 16-11 lead after the first quarter.
Then in the second Fieldcrest went on a 12-2 run to end the first half as Heider got the up and under then the layup to go along with a strong drive and finish as well as a stick back from Eddie Lorton to give Fieldcrest a 29-27 lead at the break.
Then in the third it was Bureau Valley going into Hulsing in the paint for eight quick points and a 37-33 lead.
The Knights however would respond with an 8-0 run of their own with a steal and layup from Lortona nd then put back from Braden Hahn for a 46-44 lead before taking the 58-55 victory.
Fieldcrest was led by Heider with 25 and Lorton with 15 while the Storm was led by Hulsing with 18 and Endress with 11.
Eureka 62, St. Bede 46: St. Bede kept things tight for the better part of the first half, but Eureka used a Teagab McLaughlin run and their size to pull away from the Bruins for a 62-46 victory,
With the Hornets leading 15-6, the Bruins went on a 9-0 run to end the first quarter as Kaden Nauman got the steal and layup before draining a 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 15.
After Kaden Newman hit a shot behind the arc of his own to tie the game at 18, Eureka went on an 13-1 run led by eight points alone from McLaughlin as he hit a pair of 3-pointers and three free throws from Cohen Alstat for a 31-19 lead.
“Yeah when 22 (Mclaughlin) went off that hurt us,” St. Bede coach Brian Hanson said. “From their they just used their size and quickness to get out on us. We did some nice things moving the ball around, but just not enough of it tonight to make a dent.”
St. Bede would only trail 33-26 though at the half, but the second half belonged to the Hornets. After a Mason Ross layup for the Bruins, Eureka started to get the ball into the paint as Jack Blunier picked up the old fashioned 3-point play.
Brock Monk then scored three buckets in the paint and Connell Roth drove for the layup and the 47-32 advantage and moments later it was Alstat with steal and layup.
Cohen was a monster getting to the charity stripe also as he hit 14 out of 15 as Eureka led 57-32 after three quarters of action.
Gus Burr hit a 3-pointer to start the fourth for the Bruins, but it did little to slow down the Hornets who cruised to a 62-46 victory over St. Bede
St. Bede was led by Nauman with 11 while the Hornets were led by Alstat with 20 and Brunier with 17 to go along with McLaughlin with 10.
Rock Falls 76, Putnam County 43: In the final game of the evening it was Rock Falls defeating Putnam County 76-43. Rock Falls was led by Kuitim Heald with 26, Ryken Howard with 14 and Nehemiah Menendez with 11.
