The Streator Police Department is warning residents about an ongoing phone scam in which individuals, mostly claiming to be law enforcement, are trying to trick people into sending them money.
According to reports, the scam typically begins with a call from someone claiming that the recipient has active warrants for their arrest or that a loved one is currently in La Salle County lockup.
The caller then asks for a fee to resolve the situation or pay for their bail, instructing the person on the other end to wire money through a mobile payment app.
Streator police are reminding residents that these calls are fraudulent. Police will never ask for money to be sent over the phone for any reason, including anything with warrants or bail issues.
Police urge residents to disregard these calls and hang up immediately if they receive one.
If residents believe they have been targeted, police encourage them to report the incident along with the phone number used.
