St. Bede junior Carson Riva had a big start to 2025.

Riva had 26 points, seven rebounds, six steals and two assists to lead the Bruins to a 63-50 victory over Serena on Jan. 4 as St. Bede began a stretch of three wins in four games.

“Carson is a super hard worker and is a fierce competitor,” St. Bede coach Brian Hanson said. “He had a great week. I’m really proud of him. He’s worked hard and is an awesome teammate.”

For his performance, Riva was voted the NewsTribune Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Sullivan’s and Grasser’s Plumbing & Heating.

Riva answered some questions from NewsTribune sports editor Kevin Chlum.

When did you start playing basketball and how did you get into it?

Riva: I was always playing sports growing up but I started playing basketball in second grade.

What do you enjoy about playing basketball?

Riva: I enjoy the competition it provides and getting to play with my great teammates.

What makes you a good basketball player?

Riva: I think my defense, playmaking and 3-point shooting are what make me a good basketball player.

What is your favorite sports memory?

Riva: My favorite sports memory is the Tennessee baseball trip I got to go on last year.

Who is the best athlete you’ve ever competed against in any sport?

Riva: The best athlete I’ve played was (Newman graduate) Brendan Tunink in baseball last year.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Riva: I would want to go to Egypt to see the pyramids.

When traveling home from an away game, where do you like to eat and what do you get?

Riva: I usually stop at Chipotle and get a burrito bowl.

What is your most played song recently?

Riva: My most played song recently is ‘On One Tonight’ by Gunna.

What is a movie or TV show you never get tired of watching?

Riva: A movie series I could watch on repeat is Indiana Jones.

What are your thoughts on your individual performance last week?

Riva: I felt I played well and came out strong, but it’s all thanks to my teammates and coaches who set me up for success in that game.
